When Tampa temperatures climb past 90 degrees, your air conditioner has a tough job to do. Many homeowners start wondering whether their system is running too often or not often enough. If you rely on air conditioning in Tampa, it is normal for your AC to run longer during extreme heat, but it should still cool your home steadily and efficiently. At The A/C Guy of Tampa Bay Inc., we want you to know what is normal, what is not, and when to call for help.
Your AC Will Run More in Extreme Heat
On a mild day, your AC may cycle on and off several times an hour. In 90+ degree weather, those cycles often get longer because your system is fighting high outdoor temperatures, humidity, sun exposure, and heat that builds up inside walls, attics, and windows.
It is not unusual for your AC to run 15 to 20 minutes at a time, and in very hot weather, it may run even longer. During the hottest part of the afternoon, your system may seem to be running almost constantly. That can be normal if your home is still reaching the temperature your thermostat is set to.
When Long Run Times Become a Problem
Long run times are not automatically bad. In fact, steady operation can help remove humidity and keep your home more comfortable. The problem starts when your AC runs constantly but never reaches the thermostat setting.
If your thermostat is set to 74 degrees and your home stays at 79 or 80 all afternoon, something may be wrong. Common causes include a dirty air filter, clogged coils, low refrigerant, leaky ductwork, weak airflow, or an aging system that can no longer keep up with Tampa’s heat. These are signs your AC needs professional attention.
Short Cycling Is Also a Red Flag
An AC that turns on and off every few minutes is not working properly either. This is called short cycling, and it can be hard on your system. It may be caused by an oversized unit, a dirty filter, thermostat issues, electrical problems, or low refrigerant.
Short cycling wastes energy, increases wear and tear, and can shorten the life of your equipment. If your system cannot complete a normal cooling cycle, it is time to have it checked.
What You Can Do Before Calling
Start with the basics. Replace your air filter if it is dirty, make sure vents are open and unblocked, and check that your thermostat is set correctly. Keep blinds or curtains closed during peak sun hours, and avoid setting the thermostat extremely low in hopes of cooling faster. Your AC cools at the same rate either way.
Also, look at your outdoor unit. If grass, leaves, or debris are blocking airflow, gently clear the area around it. Good airflow makes a big difference in system performance.
