When you start thinking about preparing your home for the\napproaching summer weather, the air conditioning system needs to receive\nspecial attention. It\u2019s difficult to manage being indoors during the summer\nweather if a house isn\u2019t equipped with a powerful central air conditioning\nsystem\u2014and a reliable<\/em> system as well. Power and reliability are what you\nmost want from your AC during the summer season, with energy efficiency coming\nclose behind. (Honestly, if power and reliability are in trouble, then energy\nefficiency almost certainly is as well, so they\u2019re all linked.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, schedule maintenance if you haven\u2019t already<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is a pre-requisite in the spring. The maintenance inspection\nand tune-up are essential for getting a cooling system to run at peak condition\nthroughout the coming season. Consider the air conditioner\u2019s age<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t know how long you\u2019ve had the air conditioner (the\nprevious homeowner may have installed it), check on the outdoor condenser\ncabinet, where a plate will list the manufacturer\u2019s date. An air conditioning\nsystem on average lasts about 10 to 15 years, and getting to 15 is common if the\nsystem has routine maintenance and repairs done promptly as needed. If your AC\nis over<\/em> 15 years, we recommend having an assessment of the system, which\ncan be done during maintenance, to determine if it\u2019s more cost-effective to\nhave it replaced rather than continue to use it for another season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about your cooling costs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Has it cost more over the previous summers to cool your\nhouse than before? If the answer is \u201cyes,\u201d can you account for that through\nincreased electrical costs, more people living in the house, or any other reason\nto run the AC for longer? If you can\u2019t put a finger on the cost increase, you\nmay have an AC with a hidden repair issue you haven\u2019t noticed, or one that\u2019s in\npermanent decline. Get the experts in to look at the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

See if everything seems fine with a test run<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you haven\u2019t had the AC on for a few weeks, turn it on and\ngive it about an hour to run. Walk around the house and check on the even distribution\nof cooling. Listen for any odd noises from the AC cabinets, and watch for odd\nsmells from the vents. Check that the AC cycles on and off normally, using at\nleast 15 minutes of cooling cycle time before it shuts down. Check to see if\nthe air filter needs to be changed for a clean one. If you notice anything amiss\nduring this test, you\u2019ll probably need a repair before the heat arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
